ABOUT THE EVENT

Doha Triathlon will take place on Friday 8th February 2019, in the surrounding area of the Museum of Islamic Art, with the scenic view of Doha’s skyline in the background.

This is the third edition of the event which started on 20th January 2017. In addition of the full Olympic Triathlon, Sprint and Super Sprint distances that we offered last year, we have expanded the offer to take adults in the Super Sprint distance. This is for beginners who would like to give a try to triathlon, as a first step to enter triathlon competition in individual mode. There is also an official Duathlon race for kids ranging from 7 to 12 years old.

Distances:

Kids Duathlon – 2 km bike, 800m run
Super Sprint – 375m swim, 10 km bike, 2.5k run
Sprint – 750m swim, 20 km bike, 5k run
Olympic – 1500m swim, 40 km bike, 10k run

(*) Note: Although the different races are based in these distances, in order to make looping in the cycling and running courses easier and safer for participants, you might find differences.

Ages:

Kids Duathlon (7-9 and 10-12 years old)
Super Sprint (13-15 and 16+ adults)
Sprint and Olympic (16+ adults)

The swim will take place in the bay behind the Museum. Doha average sea water temperature in February is about 19 degrees Celsius (66.2 Fahrenheit) and therefore, as per ITU rules, the use of wetsuit will be most likely optional.

Transition will be placed next to Richard Serra’s ‘7’ Sculpture. The cycling leg will be along the Corniche and back to the Museum Park for the run.

The Museum of Islamic Art, is one of the Doha’s most iconic building, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei. It hosts a collection of finest Islamic art pieces from across the Islamic world from the 7th to the 19th century.

DRESS CODE

This consists of a vest or short sleeve top and running/cycling shorts for the run/bike sections. Tri-suits can be worn and are recommended. Wetsuits, as per ITU rules, will be most likely optional. Swimsuits must not be used for cycling or running and chests must be covered during the bike and run legs. There are no change tents provided in transition. Nudity is strictly prohibited in the transition area. Failure to comply with the dress code will result in disqualification.

Registration and transition will typically open at 4.30 am. There will be soon a time table with all the races and times including deadlines for transition.

  • How will the event start?

All competitors will be required to get into the water before the start. Kayaks will position you to the water start line. The race will be a mass water start, set off by a gun. Do not be late for the start of your race otherwise you will not be allowed to race.

  • What time does the event finish?

We anticipate to re-open the Corniche for traffic at 10:30 am and to finish the event around same time.

Only you will be able to say what time your race will finish.  On average an Olympic distance triathlon takes between 2 and 3 ¾ hours.

  • Where should I collect my race pack?

All athletes are required to collect their race pack, containing race giveaways, race numbers and stickers. There will be an option to collect the race pack one day before the race. More information will come at the time.

  • Is the race briefing mandatory and how long will it take?

The pre-race and safety briefing will take place at 5:50am, this will provide you with any last minute course or rule changes. The briefing will take no longer than 10 minutes. We will soon be sending you a pre-race briefing video for you to watch before race day. An athlete information pack will also been sent to you detailing all the race information.

  • How is the event timed?

We will be using our own timing system. All competitors will be given their timing chip on race day at registration. They will have to return the chip after crossing the finish line. Teams will be issued one chip; the chip is to be passed between team members in transition only. There is a penalty of 500 QR in case the chip is lost or not returned. Competitors who have not returned the chip and not paid the penalty are registered in a database and not allowed to compete again in the event.

  • Can I drop my bike off the day before?

We are studying this option and we will inform you through the race instructions.

  • What about if I reach transition after deadline on race day?

We really advise you to be for registration at 4:30 am or as early as you can and drop your bike off in transition before deadline.

If you arrive after this time you won’t be able to race. The deadline will be published in the race instructions.

  • What time does transition open and close on race day?

Transition will close at 05:30 am (unless a different time is published in the race instructions) and at this time no athletes will be allowed in the transition area prior to their race. If you have not racked your bike by this time you will not be allowed to race.

  • When can I get my bike out of transition after the race?

You will be able to remove your bike from transition only after the race has finished.  We anticipate that this will be around 10:30am. Only athletes with race numbers, matching their bike number will be able to remove bikes and kit from transition, this is to ensure the safety and security of your bike.

  • Is there somewhere I can store my bag?

There will be bag drop area next to registration.  Each competitor has a baggage tag INSIDE your race pack printed with the same race number – affix it around the handle of your bag before depositing it. If you choose to use this facility make sure your bag closes securely (nothing will fall out) and do not include valuables – organizers do not accept responsibility for any loss. To collect afterwards simply show your bib number.
